Sacramento Ragtime Society
Ragtime is America’s first original music. Known for its
entrancing syncopated rhythms, it was popular from the late 1890s up to World
War I. Since the 1940s ragtime has enjoyed several revivals, with new
performers, composers and listeners constantly joining in.
In 1982, the Sacramento
Ragtime Society (SRS) was formed as a grass-roots effort to perform and promote Ragtime. We're still gathering together on a
monthly basis to play for each other and to share our love for this wonderful music. We
now have over 150 members nationwide. In addition to our meetings, we publish a
monthly newsletter providing a calendar of ragtime events throughout California.
We normally meet the last
Sunday of every month from 1:00 to
4:00.
We meet in JB's Lounge of the Red Lion Hotel Sacramento at Arden
Village
at 1401 Arden Way, Sacramento,
CA 95815. Check below for our meeting

The Sacramento Ragtime Society normally meets on
the LAST Sunday of each
month in the afternoon. Meetings are mostly music, spliced with
informal
historical ragtime talk, announcements of upcoming events, etc. In
addition to
solo pianists we have string, horn and percussion players. Besides the
many fine
local performers, we often have guests from the San Francisco Bay Area
and from
other locations on the West Coast and
beyond.
The atmosphere is casual and
the audience very supportive.
Many students and beginning musicians have come to our meetings, gotten
turned
on to ragtime, and gone on to become excellent ragtime players!
You are welcome to come by and
listen or play. There is no
charge for admission.

What
Is The Difference Between
The SRS And The West Coast Ragtime Society?
Some people get confused
between the SRS and the WCRS and
believe they are the same organization. Although the two societies have
many members in common, they operate as separate entities. A subscription to
the SRS Newsletter does not convey membership in the WCRS and membership in the
WCRS does not provide a subscription to the SRS Newsletter.
The WCRS was formed in the
1980s in Fresno, California and moved to Sacramento in 1997. Although there was discussion at that
time of merging, each group decided to continue with their own identities.
The SRS is unincorporated and exists solely for the purpose
of having monthly sessions to promote ragtime in Sacramento. The SRS has no
formal membership but does provide a newsletter for an annual $16 subscription.
The WCRS is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation whose purpose is to promote ragtime
through an annual festival, concerts, and other activities.
Membership in the WCRS requires payment of annual membership dues. The WCRS
membership meets annually to elect Board Members and conduct other business. The
WCRS Board of Directors meets during the year to conduct the affairs of the corporation.
